Mikhail Red is aFilipino filmmaker andstoryteller. He is best known for his filmsBirdshot (2016),Eerie (2019), andDead Kids (2019), which was the first everNetflix original film from the Philippines.

A prolific director whose professional career started in his early 20s, Red's films traverse a variety of genres and combine genre elements with social commentary.[citation needed]

Early life

Mikhail Red is the eldest son of Raymond Red, who won theShort Film Palme d'Or for his filmAnino at the2000 Cannes Film Festival.[1][2] At the age of 15 Red studied filmmaking underMarilou Diaz-Abaya, and directed his first short film, calledThe Threshold.[2][3] The film took Red to his first international film festival, in Germany.[4] Several more short films would follow, such asKamera,Harang, andHazard, withHarang winning the Grand Prize at theSeoul International Youth Film Festival andHazard winning the Special Jury Prize at theCinemanila International Film Festival in 2010.[3]

Since hischildhood days, Red was agamer and therole-playing games are reflected in theethical dilemma of hischaracters.[5]

Red was 21 years old when he directed his first feature filmRekorder, in 2013.[6] The experimental film, about film piracy and voyeurism, took 13 days to shoot.[3] After screening atCinemalaya, the film won Red the Best New Director award at the 2014Vancouver International Film Festival.[7]

In 2016, Red directed the filmBirdshot, a police procedural and coming-of-age drama. The film won Best Film in the Asian Future section at the 29thTokyo International Film Festival.[8][9] It was also the Philippines' submission for the Best Foreign Language Film at the90th Academy Awards, and was the first Filipino film to be released worldwide by Netflix.[10][11]

Red's first film with a major studio was the horror filmEerie, released in 2019. The film was an international co-production involvingStar Cinema and Aurora Media of Singapore.[12][3] The film starredCharo Santos-Concio andBea Alonzo.

In 2019, Red directed the heist filmDead Kids which was the first FilipinoNetflix original film.[13] This was followed by the zombie filmBlock Z (2020), a return to mainstream filmmaking and Star Cinema.[6]

Red's latest film isArisaka, a revenge Western film produced byTen17P, a release date for which has not yet been announced.[14][15] He has also completed production of season 3 of theHBO seriesHalfworlds.[14]

Prospective projects

Red has a number of films planned or in development. He has been developingThe Grandstand, a hostage drama based on theManila hostage crisis written byRicky Lee and to be produced byGlobe Studios.[14][15] He also plans to direct a science-fiction film calledQuantum Suicide which will be co-produced with Japan; he has stated he wantsDaniel Padilla to star in the film.[14]

Red is also planning to direct a prequel toEerie titledEerie Zero and a remake ofMagic Temple (1996), both forStar Cinema.[15][16] He also has a thriller planned, to be written by his brother Nikolas Red and set during the pandemic, his first film forViva Films.[15] Other projects that Red has mentioned include a film about theBlack Dahlia serial killer (which has been greenlit after being in development for four years), a Star Cinema hacker-heist film featuring a young cast, and a period horror film.[17][18]

On February 1, 2023, Variety announced that Red is set to be the series director of "Dreamwalker", a live-action book-to-series adaptation of a story about a monster-slaying vlogger.[19] The series is based on the graphic novel by Mikey Sutton and Noel Layon Flores, and is also set to haveKate Valdez in the lead role.
