Mikaela Madison Rosberg (born March 25, 1999), known professionally asMikey Madison, is an American actress. She began her career acting in short films and received recognition for her role as a sullen teenager in theFX comedy seriesBetter Things (2016–2022). Madison then playedManson family memberSusan Atkins inQuentin Tarantino'sOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) andAmber Freeman inScream (2022).

For herbreakthrough role as the titularstripper inSean Baker's filmAnora (2024), Madison earnedseveral accolades, including anAcademy Award and aBAFTA Award.

Early life

Mikaela Madison Rosberg was born on March 25, 1999, in Los Angeles, California, as the third daughter and fourth child of five children of Michael and Tracy Rosberg.[1][2][3] Both of her parents are psychologists with her father specialized inschizophrenia and her mother specialized in children.[3] She has two brothers, one of whom is her twin, and two older sisters.[4][3][5]

Madison lived inSanta Clarita, a Los Angeles suburb, for the first few years of her life, before her family moved to theWoodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles.[6] She was raised in theSan Fernando Valley.[3] Madison initially trained as a competitivehorseback rider before switching to acting at age 14. She washomeschooled after the seventh grade.[2][7] Her grandmother's cousin was a Texas cowboy named Clarence Hailey Long Jr., who appeared on the cover of the August 1949 issue ofLife magazine, which served as the main inspiration for theMarlboro Man.[8][9] She grew up watching films byWoody Allen,Quentin Tarantino,Sofia Coppola, andMartin Scorsese.[3]

Madison isJewish,[2] though she was raised in anon-practicing household.[3][10]

Career

Madison made her acting debut in 2013, appearing in the short filmsRetirement andPani's Box.[11] In 2014, after appearing in the short filmBound for Greatness, she filmed her first feature film,Liza, Liza, Skies Are Grey, which was not released until 2017.[12][13]

In 2016, Madison began a starring role as Max Fox, a sullen teenager, in theFX comedy-drama seriesBetter Things created byLouis C.K. andPamela Adlon, which ran until 2022.[14][15] From 2017 to 2018, she guest starred in theBravo dark comedy seriesImposters.[16] In 2018, she appeared in the drama filmsMonster andNostalgia.[17][18]

Madison in 2019

Madison earned recognition for her role as theManson Family memberSusan "Sadie" Atkins inQuentin Tarantino's period drama filmOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood,[19][20] which premiered at the2019 Cannes Film Festival and was a commercial success.[21] Also in 2019, she had a voice role as Candi, the Barista, in the animated black comedy filmThe Addams Family.[22]

The following year, Madison was cast asAmber Freeman inScream, the fifth film oftheScream franchise, which was directed byMatt Bettinelli-Olpin andTyler Gillett.[23] The film was released in 2022 to critical and commercial success,[24][25][26] becoming the 28th-highest-grossing film of its year.[27] Writing forThe A.V. Club, Katie Rife called Madison a standout performer in the film.[28][29] In 2024, Madison had a supporting role in the miniseriesLady in the Lake.[30]

FilmmakerSean Baker cast Madison in the comedy-drama filmAnora as the titular stripper and sex worker.[31] He cast her without an audition after watching her performances inOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood andScream, and wrote the character specifically for her.[32][33] For the role, she studiedRussian and performed her own stunts, including two fight scenes.[34][2] She also learned pole dancing and temporarily relocated toBrighton Beach, the neighborhood setting of the film, in preparation for the film.[35] The film premiered at the2024 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim,[36] winning thePalme d'Or.[37][38] It became a critical and commercial success, and Madison was praised for her performance.[39][40][41]Richard Lawson ofVanity Fair praised Madison'sBrooklyn accent and found her performance "big and vivid, brash but charming".[42] Her performance won her theAcademy Award for Best Actress (making her the first person fromGeneration Z to win an Academy Award in an acting category) and theBAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, in addition to nominations for aGolden Globe and aSAG Award in the same category.[43][44][45]

In March 2025, Madison guest hosted an episode of the live sketch comedy showSaturday Night Live.[46] In April 2025, Madison had been in brief negotiations to appear inStar Wars: Starfighter, but declined due to a salary dispute.[47][48] In May 2025, Madison was cast in the upcoming filmReptilia, to be directed byAlejandro Landes.[49] By June 2025, she entered talks to star inThe Masque of the Red Death for A24.[48] In September 2025, Madison was cast as whistle blowerFrances Haugen inThe Social Reckoning, the sequel is the 2010sThe Social Network to be released on October 9, 2026.[50]

Personal life

Madison in 2024

Madison lives in her native Los Angeles.[31] She is avegan.[51] She does not usesocial media, saying in a November 2024 interview that it does not feel "authentic or natural" to her and that she would not "have anything very impactful to add" to social media.[52] She added that she is a "very sensitive person" who believes people should not read what others are saying about them and thus keeps herself "ignorant to that part of the Internet" for hermental health.[52]

Madison describes herself as non-religious but a "very spiritual person."[10]
