Michael Chung (1950 – 28 December 2021) also known asMao Chung, was a Jamaican musician who played keyboards, guitar and percussion instruments. He was also an arranger and record producer ofJamaican music, and worked with a wide array of musicians, notablyLee Perry andSly and Robbie.
Chung was born inChristiana,Jamaica, in 1950.[1] He was ofChinese Jamaican descent, and grew up on Tewari Crescent inKingston, Jamaica. He later moved with his family to theVineyard Town area of the city, attendingSt. George's College.[2] He began his career in music as the guitarist for the Mighty Mystics, The Virtues (1967–69), Generation Gap, and the Federal Studios house band theNow Generation Band,[3] before playing with artists such asJacob Miller andInner Circle in the 1970s.[4] As a member ofWord, Sound and Power from 1978, along withSly & Robbie, he backedPeter Tosh onMystic Man,Wanted Dread and Alive, andBush Doctor, playing guitar andsynthesizer.[4][5] He played forLee Perry's bandThe Upsetters (?-1975?-?), and theCompass Point All Stars (Island Records).[2] He often accompaniedSly Dunbar andRobbie Shakespeare on theirrecordings and played guitar forBlack Uhuru on their albumsAnthem,Red andChill Out.[4]
He worked with many Jamaican and international artists, includingMaxi Priest,Grace Jones,the Rolling Stones,Serge Gainsbourg,Bette Midler,Big Mountain,Art Ensemble of Chicago,James Brown,Garnett Silk,Joe Cocker andSinéad O'Connor.[2][6]
Chung was the brother of keyboardist/producerGeoffrey Chung,[4] and had one daughter, Katharine. He died frommyeloma in Kingston, Jamaica on 28 December 2021, at the age of 71.[7]
