Michael 'Mike' Archer Winch (born 20 July 1948)[1] is a male retired Britishshot putter.
Winch representedEngland and won asilver medal in the shot put event, at the1974 British Commonwealth Games inChristchurch,New Zealand.[2][3] Four years later he representedEngland in the discus and shot put events, at the1978 Commonwealth Games inEdmonton,Alberta,Canada[4][5] and in 1982 he representedEngland for the third time at the Commonwealth Games and won another silver medal in the shot put event, at the1982 Commonwealth Games inBrisbane,Queensland,Australia.[6][7]
Subsequent to his athletics career he has coached international athletes (mainly throwers) including multiple gold medallistJudy Oakes OBE, and Olympic athletesPhilippa Roles andEmeka Udechuku. He was chief British throws coach at the World Championships inGothenburg 1991, chief throws coach to the England team inKuala Lumpur 1998 and overall chief coach of England's athletics team at the2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games[8]
He was UK Athletics Vice President for four years, stepping down in February 2008 over the governing body’s handling of theDwain Chambers controversy.[9] He has written several sporting technical books (strength and conditioning training) and three novels:Running From Gold,Run to Death, andThe Convocation of Colours).
