Mike Cawley (born August 28, 1972) is an American former professionalfootball player who was aquarterback in theCanadian Football League (CFL),NFL Europe and theXFL. He playedcollege football for theJames Madison Dukes. He was selected by theIndianapolis Colts of theNational Football League (NFL) in the sixth round of the1996 NFL draft.
Cawley is married toKatie Schumacher-Cawley, the headvolleyball coach atPenn State. Together, they have three daughters.[1]
Cawley was selected by theIndianapolis Colts in the sixth round (205th overall) of the1996 NFL draft.[2] He was signed to the team'spractice squad on August 27, 1996.[3]
Cawley signed with theOrlando Predators of theArena Football League (AFL) for the 1997 season but was placed on the exempt list after signing with the Tiger-Cats.[4][5] On March 21, 2000, his AFL rights were traded to theFlorida Bobcats forBraniff Bonaventure.[6]
Cawley was signed as a free agent by theHamilton Tiger-Cats on June 1, 1997. He played in eight games for the Ticats in1997, ranking third on the team with 181 yards rushing. He also threw for 547 yards on 43 of 79 passing attempts with five touchdowns and four interceptions. During the1998 season, Cawley saw action in two games for Hamilton completing five of eight passes for 47 yards. He was released on October 19, 1998.[7]
Cawley was signed bySaskatchewan Roughriders on October 2, 1999. He was released on October 16.
Cawley was signed by theBuffalo Bills on February 17, 2000. He was released during final roster cuts on August 27.[8]
Cawley was signed by theCalgary Stampeders on September 20, 2000.[9] He was released on November 10.
Cawley was selected 13th overall by theLas Vegas Outlaws in theXFL supplemental draft on December 29, 2000.[10] Cawley served as the backup quarterback, but because of injuries to starterRyan Clement, Cawley played several games as the Outlaws' starter. Cawley himself would end up injured, eventually ending his career.
