Mike Cafarella is acomputer scientist specializing indatabase management systems. He is a principalresearch scientist ofcomputer science atMIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.[1] Before coming to MIT, he was a professor of Computer Science and Engineering atthe University of Michigan from 2009 to 2020. Along withDoug Cutting, he is one of the original co-founders of theHadoop andNutch open-source projects.[2][3] Cafarella was born inNew York City but moved toWestwood, MA early in his childhood. After completing his bachelor's degree atBrown University, he earned a Ph.D. specializing in database management systems at theUniversity of Washington underDan Suciu andOren Etzioni.[4] He was also involved in several notable start-ups, includingTellme Networks,[5] and co-founder of Lattice Data, which was acquired by Apple in 2017.[6]
