Mihai Zamfir (born 22 January 1955) is aRomanian former footballdefender andmanager.[3]

Club career

Zamfir was born on 22 January 1955 inMoșoaia, Romania and began playing junior-level football in 1971 atArgeș Pitești.[1][2] He made hisDivizia A debut on 30 September 1973 under coachȘtefan Coidum in a 2–1 home victory againstSportul Studențesc București.[1][4] In the1978–79 UEFA Cup edition he helped the team eliminatePanathinaikos in the first round with a 5–1 aggregate victory.[1][5] In the following round they metValencia led byMario Kempes, earning a 2–1 win in the first leg, but they lost the second one with 5–2, thus the campaign ended.[1][5][6] In thesame season he helped Argeș win the title, being used by coachFlorin Halagian in 33 games in which he scored two goals.[1][7] In the following season they got pastAEK Athens in the first round of the1979–80 European Cup, the team being eliminated in the following one by title holders and eventual winners,Nottingham Forest, Zamfir receiving a red card for repeated fouls in the 80th minute of the first leg.[1][8]

In 1984 he joinedOlt Scornicești where he made his last Divizia A appearance on 17 December 1987 in a 0–0 draw againstDinamo București, having a total of 365 matches with 11 goals in the competition, also totaling 12 games in European competitions.[1] Zamfir ended his career in 1989, after playing inDivizia B forInter Sibiu andDacia Pitești, helping the first earn promotion to the first league.[1][2]

International career

Zamfir played 10 games forRomania, making his debut when coachȘtefan Kovács sent him in the 24th minute to replaceFlorin Cheran in a 2–0 win overBulgaria in the1977–80 Balkan Cup.[9][10] He also played in the second leg against Bulgaria which ended in a 1–1 draw.[9][11] Subsequently, he made three appearances in theEuro 1980 qualifiers.[9] Zamfir's last appearance occurred on 8 April 1981 in a 2–1 away loss in a friendly againstIsrael.[9]

Managerial career

Zamfir coached several clubs in Romanian football, starting withDacia Pitești, then working forArgeș Pitești, Chimica Târnăveni,Politehnica Timișoara,Cimentul Fieni,Unirea Alba Iulia and Girom Albota.[2][3] He also worked as an assistant forNicolae Dobrin andFlorin Halagian at Argeș Pitești, and for Cornel Iliescu atDacia Mioveni.[3][2] Zamfir coached abroad at theUnited Arab Emirates club Al Sabah.[3]

Personal life

His wife, Dana, was ahandball player and his daughter Cristina playedvolleyball.[2][12]
