Given that there was no high school baseball in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Cummings "played in a lot of open leagues, amateur leagues" sometimes against players as old as 21 when he was only 16.[3] In 1987, he played for theSt. Croix team which represented the U.S. Virgin Islands at the1987 Senior League World Series.[4] Cummings moved toMiami for his senior year of high school so that he could play baseball atMiami Edison Senior High School in the hopes of earning acollege baseball scholarship.[3] Cummings had a .400batting average in his only season of high school baseball. Prior to the1990 Major League Baseball draft, one talent evaluator said Cummings "could outrunVince Coleman." Another said he was "the best outfielder to ever play inDade County."[5]

Cummings helped the Diamondbacks win the2001 World Series over theNew York Yankees, scoring the tyingrun in the ninth inning during Game 7. It would be three years before Cummings played in the majors again, spending time in theMilwaukee Brewers andChicago Cubs minor league systems from2002-2003.
