Michelle Suzanne Ruff[5] is an American voice actress known for her work inanime andvideo games. In her early voice acting career, she used her mother's name, Georgette Rose, as a pseudonym.[2] Some of her roles includeRukia Kuchiki inBleach,Yuki Nagato inThe Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya,Yoko Littner inGurren Lagann,Fujiko Mine inLupin the Third,Chi inChobits,Aoi Sakuraba inAi Yori Aoshi,Elie inRave Master, Nat inThe Promised Neverland, andSinon inSword Art Online.[6] In video games, she is the voice ofJill Valentine in theResident Evil series, Yukari Takeba and Sadayo Kawakami in thePersona series, Katherine McBride inCatherine and its definitive editionCatherine: Full Body, Cream the Rabbit in theSonic the Hedgehog series and Crimson Viper in theStreet Fighter series.[7]

Career

Ruff grew up inDetroit, Michigan and graduated fromMichigan State University. While she was there, she worked at a talent agency and attended a radio audition, which marked her first venture into the voiceover business.[8] InChicago, she studied withSecond City,Players Workshop andImprov Olympic.[2][9]

After moving toLos Angeles, she worked with some directors on looping and voice work for films and TV shows. In anAnime Dream interview, Ruff creditsRichard Epcar,Steve Kramer andMichael Sorich for training her to dub anime.[10] In theDigimon series, she was referred by directorMary Elizabeth McGlynn to audition for Lopmon and Antylamon inDigimon Tamers, and inDigimon Frontier, she landed the lead role of Zoe Orimoto. Ruff said that it was her first show that made it to TV, and a show that let her "work my acting muscle".[2] She played tomboy-ish charactersMiyao inCarried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran andKiki Rosita inMobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team.[10]

In 2007, Ruff received two nominations for theAmerican Anime Awards, one for Best Actress for her work inBleach andLupin the 3rd, and one for Best Actress in a Comedy forLupin the 3rd, but lost toMary Elizabeth McGlynn andDebi Derryberry, respectively.[11] In 2009, the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation gave her an SPJA Industry Award for Best Voice Actress (English) for her work as Rukia Kuchiki in theBleach movieMemories of Nobody.[12]
