Michael Annals (21 April 1938 – 1990) was a theatricalscenic andcostume designer.[1]
Michael Annals was born in what was thenHarrow, Middlesex (later incorporated intoGreater London) on 21 April 1938. His parents were Henry Ernest Annals and Constance Anne Annals (née Walter). He attended theHarrow Weald County Grammar School and theHornsey College of Art.[2]
Michael Annals began his career in 1961 by designing the sets and costumes for theOld Vic company'sSoviet Union tour ofMacbeth and their production ofDr Faustus at theEdinburgh Festival. In 1964, Annals designed the sets and costumes for another production ofMacbeth, this time at the National Theatre of Portugal.[2] Annals produced designs for several originalBroadway theatre productions, includingThe Royal Hunt of the Sun in 1965, the short-livedThose That Play the Clowns in 1966,Staircase in 1968, andNoises Off in 1983.[3]
From 1966 through 1967, Annals served as Associate Professor of Scenic Design atYale University.[2] Annals was nominated for the 1969Tony Award for Best Costume Design for his work inMorning, Noon and Night, though the award was won byLoudon Sainthill[4] for his work onCanterbury Tales.[5]
Michael Annals has produced designs for two major films: The1962 film adaptation ofEugene O'Neill's playLong Day's Journey into Night and the1977 film adaptation ofHenry Fielding's playJoseph Andrews. Annals served as both theproduction designer andcostume designer for both films.[6] Annals was nominated for the 1977BAFTA Award for Best Costume Design for his work inJoseph Andrews, though the award was won byDanilo Donati for his work inFellini's Casanova.[7]
