Themonohalomethanes are organic compounds in which a hydrogen atom inmethane is replaced by ahalogen. They belong to thehaloalkanes or to the subgroup ofhalomethanes.

The four common[a] members arefluoromethane, chloromethane, bromomethane andiodomethane.

Historical name for this group ismethyl halides; it's still widely used. The compounds of this class are often described asCH3X or MeX (X - any halogen, Me -methyl group).

Analogs with carbon atom replaced with a heaviergroup 14 element are also known:

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^Highly radioactiveCH3At (methyl astatide) has been detected.[5] The known isotopes of even heavier group 17 element, tennessine, are too short-lived to allow for chemical experimentation.
