Metanephrine, also known asmetadrenaline, is ametabolite ofepinephrine (also known as adrenaline) created by action ofcatechol-O-methyl transferase on epinephrine. An article in theJournal of the American Medical Association, 2002, indicated that the measurement of plasma free levels of themetanephrines group of molecules (including metanephrine andnormetanephrine) is the best tool in the diagnosis ofpheochromocytoma, an adrenal medullaryneoplasm.[1]
