Mestwin I, Duke of Pomerania

Mestwin I[1][2] (Polish:Mściwoj I gdański orMszczuj I,Kashubian:Mscëwòj I; c. 1160 – 1/2 May 1219 or 1220) was Prince ofPomerelia (styled himself asprinceps Pomoranorum)[3] from about 1205 until his death.

Mestwin was a member of theSamborides dynasty, the son of DukeSobiesław of Gdańsk and younger brother ofSambor I, whom he succeeded inPomerelia. In the tables ofOliwa Abbey, outside Gdańsk, he is recorded aspacificus ("the Peaceful").

As Mestwin I,dei gracia princeps inGdanzk,[4] he had founded a convent of nuns (probably thePremonstratensian abbey ofŻukowo), the castellany ofBiałogarda at the border with the PomeranianLands of Schlawe and Stolp on theŁeba river, and several villages between the riversRadunia andSłupia. After KingValdemar II of Denmark had conquered the southern coast of theBaltic Sea withGdanzk during acrusade against theOld Prussians, Duke Mestwin in 1210 had to acceptDanish overlordship, but was able to free himself again the next year.

He was married to Swinisława (d. 1240), formerly referred to as a daughter of DukeRatibor I of Pomerania. They had eight children:[5]
