Merriwa River, aperennial river of theHunter River catchment, is located in theUpper Hunter region ofNew South Wales,Australia.
Merriwa River rises on the southern slopes of theGreat Dividing Range, below Oxleys Peak, north ofMerriwa and flows generally south, joined by eight minortributaries before reaching itsconfluence with theGoulburn River below Mount Kerrabee. The river descends 317 metres (1,040 ft) over its 78 kilometres (48 mi)course.[3]
At the town of Merriwa, theGolden Highway crosses the Merriwa River.[3]
Merriwa is thought to be derived from theAboriginal word meaning "grass seeds."[2]
