Chronology
PredecessorMercedes-Benz Biome

TheMercedes-Benz Silver Lightning, also called theSilver Arrow,[1] is aconcept car built for the2011 Los Angeles Auto Show Design Challenge, where it won the best animation award for their short filmSilver Lightning. It was conceived by theMercedes-Benz Advanced Design Studio inCarlsbad, California, who also previously created the Mercedes-Benz Biome.[2]

Design

[edit]
The Silver Lightning featuredcentreless wheels

The Silver Lightning drew heavy inspiration from the 1930sSilver Arrow race cars, most notably theMercedes-Benz W125 driven byRudolf Caracciola that won the1937 Grand Prix, as well as the famous 1955Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR designed byRudolf Uhlenhaut.[1] The design theme was also influenced by somesci-fi movies, such asStar Trek,Tron: Legacy andStar Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.[3]

Its roof is constructed of several pieces of small, lightweight magnetic squares, and usesMag-Tech technology that allows them to either combine to form ahardtop, or retracted to convert the car into a roadster.[4] Theomni-directional wheels allow the Silver Lightning to be able to steer freely in any direction, and are enclosed in rings integrated within the car's main body.[3]

To comply with the competition's theme of designing "Hollywood’s Hottest New Movie Car", it was accompanied by a short film calledSilver Lightning, which features twocrash test dummies calledHans05 andFranz02 attempting and eventually succeeding in the rescue of their prized stolen Silver Lightning from Dr. Crash-Barrier, the main antagonist of the movie.[1]
