InGreek mythology,Melaena orMelena/mɪˈliːnə/ (Ancient Greek:Μέλαινα,romanized: Mélaina, feminineAncient Greek:μέλᾱς,romanized: mélās "black, dark"),[1]Melane/ˈmɛləniː/ (Koinē Greek:Μελανή,romanized: Melanḗ) orMelanis[2] was aCoryciannymph, or member of the propheticThriae, of the springs ofDelphi inPhocis.
Melaena's father was one of the local river gods, eitherKephisos orPleistos of northernBoeotia.[3][4] In another account, she was called the daughter of KingHyamus ofHyampolis andMelanthea (Melantho), daughter ofDeucalion. Her sister was calledCelaeno.[2]
Melanis was loved byApollo and bore himDelphos, eponym of Delphi.[citation needed]
Melaina was often identified withThyia who was also named as the mother of Delphos in other traditions.[5] She was usually confused with thechthonic nymphMelinoë, daughter ofPersephone byHades.
