Republican candidateShane McFarland defeated Vice Mayor Ron Washington, becoming the youngest person elected as mayor in Murfreesboro history.[2] The mayoral election coincided with other elections, including races for Murfreesboro City Council.

The2018 Murfreesboro mayoral election took place on August 2, 2018.IncumbentRepublican mayorShane McFarland ran for re-election and won a second term in office with an uncontested race.[6] The mayoral election coincided with other elections, including races for Murfreesboro City Council.[7]

Murfreesboro has been a Republican stronghold. In the2016 presidential election, Murfreesboro voted forDonald Trump by 19.0% and voted forBill Lee by 9.6% in the2018 gubernatorial election. During this time,Phil Bredesen was the most recent Democrat to win Murfreesboro by 0.4% in the2018 senate election.[8]
