Maximiliano "Maxi"Gómez González (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈmaksiˈɣomes]; born 14 August 1996) is a Uruguayan professionalfootballer who plays as aforward forNacional.
Having begun his career withDefensor Sporting, he moved to Spain in 2017, where he made 167La Liga appearances and scored 51 goals forCelta andValencia.
A full international forUruguay since 2017, Gómez was selected for theFIFA World Cup in2018 and2022 and theCopa América in2019 and2021.
Born inPaysandú, Gómez joinedDefensor Sporting's youth setup in 2013, from CA Litoral.[2] He made his first team debut on 15 September 2015, coming on as a latesubstitute forHéctor Acuña in a 1–0 away win againstUniversitario forthe year'sCopa Sudamericana.[3]
Gómez made hisPrimera División debut on 4 October 2015, but in a 0–4 away loss againstNacional.[4] His first senior goal came on 16 October, the last in a 2–3 home defeat againstMontevideo Wanderers.[5]
On 31 October 2015, Gómez scored a brace in a 4–1 home routing ofJuventud de Las Piedras; he repeated the feat on 20 November in a 2–2 home draw againstEl Tanque Sisley, and also in a 3–2 home success overDanubio the following 28 February. On 22 May 2016, he scored four goals in a 6–5 away win against El Tanque Sisley, and finishedhis first season with 14 goals in only 21 matches.[6]
After only four goals in 14 matches in the2016 campaign, Gómez contributed with ten goals in 12 matches in2017; highlights included a brace in a 2–0 away win against Danubio on 5 March 2017.[7]

In May 2017, Gómez signed a five-year deal withLa Liga sideCelta Vigo, moving abroad for the first time in his career.[8] He made his debut for the club on 19 August, starting and scoring a brace in a 2–3 home loss againstReal Sociedad,[9] and finished hisdebut season with 17 goals from 36 games, seventh highest in the division.[10]
Gómez contributed 13 goals in2018–19 as Celta finished one place above relegation. This included one on the final day, as they defeated newly crowned championsFC Barcelona 2–0 atBalaídos.[11]
On 14 July 2019, Gómez signed a contract withValencia CF until 2024, with his release clause set at €140 million.[12] The deal saw Valencia pay €14.5 million withSanti Mina andJorge Sáenz moving in the opposite direction, the latter joining Celta on a two-year loan deal.[13] He made his debut on 24 August away to his former club, playing the first hour of a 1–0 loss before being replaced byRodrigo.[14]
Gómez scored his first goal for theChe on 14 September, coming off the bench to net at the end of a 5–2 loss to Barcelona at theCamp Nou.[15] Against the same opponents on 25 January 2020, he scored both goals in a 2–0 victory atMestalla, preserving his team's unbeaten home season and inflicting a first defeat ofQuique Setién's spell in charge of the opponents.[16]
In 2021–22, Gómez wassent off twice againstAthletic Bilbao, once for twoyellow cards in a league match and the latter on 10 February in aCopa del Rey semi-final first leg away at theSan Mamés Stadium. In the second instance, he was an unused substitute and was given a straight red card at half time for threatening theassistant referee.[17] He was issued with a two-match suspension and thereby missed thefinal, which his team lost onpenalties toReal Betis.[18]
In the summer of 2022, Valencia sought to sell Gómez due toUEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations and to free up a spot on their quota of non-European Union players. He was linked to a move toFenerbahçe SK, whosesporting director came to negotiate in Spain,[19] but signed a three-year deal with the option of a fourth at fellow TurkishSüper Lig teamTrabzonspor on 31 August. The fee was €3 million and his annual salary was set at €1.75 million.[20][21]
On 6 October 2022, Gómez was sent off after 11 minutes of a 3–1 loss atAS Monaco FC in theUEFA Europa Leaguegroup stage, for a high boot into the face ofMohamed Camara.[22]
On 22 August 2023, Gómez returned to Spain and its top tier, after agreeing to a one-year loan withCádiz CF.[23]
After spending several months as a free agent following his departure from Trabzonspor, Gómez re-joined Defensor Sporting in February 2025.[24] He scored three goals from 14 matches before he left the club in July 2025.[25]
On 10 July 2025,Nacional announced the signing of Gómez on a contract until December 2026.[26]
Gómez made his international debut forUruguay on 10 November 2017 in a goalless friendly away toPoland, as a 74th-minute substitute forGiorgian De Arrascaeta.[27] ManagerÓscar Tabárez called him up for the2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia,[28] where he made his first competitive appearance in the final group game as an added-time replacement in a 3–0 win overthe hosts inSamara.[29]
On 26 March 2019, Gómez scored his first international goal to round off a 4–0 victory overThailand and win theChina Cup.[30] He was called up for theCopa América in2019 and2021, both in Brazil.[31][32]
Gómez scored once in2022 FIFA World Cupqualification, coming on with three minutes remaining againstChile on 8 October 2020 and scoring the winner in a 2–1 victory.[33] He was called up for the final tournament inQatar,[34] playing two games as a substitute forDarwin Núñez in a group stage elimination.[35][36]
Gómez's older brother Richard, also a footballer, played in Uruguay forClub Atlético Platense. He played forGalician amateursMondariz FC while Maxi Gómez was at Celta.[37]
