Max Q is thebarbershop quartet that won the gold medalBarbershop Harmony Society International Barbershop Quartet Contest atDenver'sPepsi Center July 7, 2007.[1]The quartet's run for the title is featured in the 2009 feature documentaryAmerican Harmony.[2]

Background

Max Q formed in 2002 and began competing in the International Barbershop Quartet Contest in 2004. In 2004, 2005, and 2006, Max Q finished in second place toGotcha!,Realtime, andVocal Spectrum in consecutive years. In 2007, Max Q won by a 286-point margin over second-place quartetOC Times.

Max Q is notable in that all four members have prior experience in championship-level quartets andchoruses. With their 2007 win, DeRosa and Oxley joinedJoe Connelly as the only singers with three first-place finishes. DeRosa and Connelly have since gone on to win a record fourth gold medal withMain Street andOld School, respectively. DeRosa won a fifth gold medal with Three and a Half Men in 2024.

  • Greg Clancy – tenor; currently Musical Director of theVocal Majority chorus, and has participated in all 13 Vocal Majority gold medal victories—eleven as a singer, and the most recent two as Musical Director.[3]
  • Tony DeRosa – lead, former three-time gold medalist singing baritone with 1992 championsKeepsake, 2000 championsPlatinum, and 2017 championsMain Street.[4] He currently directs theBig Orange Chorus[5] out ofJacksonville, Florida, as well as theHeralds of Harmony[6] andToast of Tampa Show Chorus[7] women's chorus out ofTampa, Florida.
  • Gary Lewis – baritone, two-time former gold medalist singing tenor with Platinum and the Collegiate Quartet "The Real Deal".[8] He was director of the Sweet Adelines Chorus "Pride of Toledo"[9] and sang as replacement bass for 1992 champs Keepsake.[8] He now directs the Men of Independence chorus inIndependence, Ohio.[10]
  • Jeff Oxley – bass, former two-time gold medalist withThe Rapscallions in 1984 andAcoustix in 1990, former associate director and bass section leader of the Vocal Majority, participated in 6 Vocal Majority gold medal victories, and one gold medal as musical director of theMasters of Harmony chorus[11]

In 2008, Oxley and DeRosa were elected to the Westminster Chorus Fantasy Gold Quartet as bass and baritone along with leadJoe Connelly (Old School 2011, Platinum 2000, Keepsake 1992, Interstate Rivals 1987) and tenorTim Waurick (Vocal Spectrum 2006).
