Max Jammer (Hebrew:מקס ימר; bornMoshe Jammer,[1]German:[ˈjamɐ]; 13 April 1915 – 18 December 2010), was an Israeliphysicist andphilosopher of physics. He was born inBerlin, Germany. He was Rector and Acting President atBar-Ilan University from 1967 to 1977.[2]
Jammer studied physics, philosophy andhistory of science, first at theUniversity of Vienna, and then from 1935 at theHebrew University of Jerusalem, where he received a PhD in experimental physics in 1942. He served in theBritish Army for the rest of the war.[citation needed]
Jammer then returned to Hebrew University, where he lectured on the history and philosophy of science, before moving in 1952 toHarvard University. He subsequently became a lecturer there and a close colleague ofAlbert Einstein atPrinceton University. He taught at Harvard, theUniversity of Oklahoma, andBoston University, before in 1956 establishing the Department and becoming Professor of Physics atBar-Ilan University in Israel.[citation needed]
He was Rector and Acting President (succeedingJoseph H. Lookstein, and succeeded byEmanuel Rackman) atBar-Ilan University from 1967 to 1977.[3] He also co-founded the Institute for Philosophy of Science atTel Aviv University, and was president of theAssociation for the Advancement for Science in Israel. He was Visiting Professor at theSwiss Federal Institute of Technology inZürich, theUniversity of Göttingen, theInstitut Henri Poincaré,Columbia University,the Catholic University of America in Washington, D. C., and other universities in the United States and Canada.
He is the father of Rabbi Michael Yammer[4] who is therosh yeshiva (dean) ofYeshivat Sha’alvim.
