Maustetytöt (Finnish pronunciation:[ˈmɑu̯steʔˌtytøt];lit. 'spice girls')[1] is aFinnishgirl group consisting of sistersAnna Karjalainen [fi] andKaisa Karjalainen [fi]. The band's trademarks include a laconic and serious-looking performance style.[1][2]
Originally fromVaala, Maustetytöt listen to traditionalFinnish schlager, and their role model isLeevi and the Leavings.[3][4] The band's record company Is This Art! describes Maustetytöt as an "indie pop duo".[2]
Maustetytöt won the Rock of the Year and Band of the Year awards at theEmma Awards in 2020.[5] Oskari Onninen fromHelsingin Sanomat describes the band as "downright suspiciously 'authentic' and non-commercial".[4] According to Antti Luukkanen fromSoundi, the songs contain "everyday realism and the glamor of downright misery".[6]
Maustetytöt achieved international fame when they appeared inAki Kaurismäki's 2023 filmFallen Leaves,[1] performing the song "Syntynyt suruun ja puettu pettymyksin" ("Born in sorrow and clothed in disappointment").[7] According to critic Esther Zuckerman fromThe New York Times, Maustetytöt is an "impossibly cool modern Finnish duo".[7][8] Also, Bilge Ebiri fromVulture finds the Maustetytöt part in the film a "showstopping appearance".[7][9] With the publicity brought by the film, Maustetytöt has accumulated many foreign music tours, such as in Sweden and Germany.[1][7]
