Matthias Helferich (born 14 October 1988) is a German right-wing politician for theAlternative for Germany party.[1] He has been a factionless member of theBundestag since 2021.[2] In 2025, he was re-admitted to the AfD parliamentary group like the fellow controversial politicianMaximilian Krah.[3][4]

Career

Helferich was born in 1988 inDortmund,North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. He served at Bundeswehr inguard unit (Wachbataillon) in Siegburg and begann to study 2009 law atUniversity Bonn.

Helferich was elected to theBundestag in 2021.[2] Although a party member of AfD, he never entered the party faction and is currently a factionless member of the Bundestag.

Within the AfD, Helferich is part of theethnic-national wing underBjörn Höcke.[5]

In 2025, he was re-admitted back into the AfD faction.[6][7]

Political views

Helferich called himself a "democraticFreisler", referring to a Nazi-era judge.[8] He later said that his statements were meant as parody: "If you are confronted with Nazi accusations as frequently as AfD politicians, you compensate for that in private spheres. You ridicule it."[9][10][11]
