Matthew Rankin is aCanadian experimental filmmaker.[1] His feature-length debut,The Twentieth Century, premiered in 2019 and was nominated for eightCanadian Screen Awards, winning three.[2]

His second feature film,Universal Language (Une langue universelle), premiered in theDirectors' Fortnight section of the2024 Cannes Film Festival,[3][4] The film was longlisted for the 2024Jean-Marc Vallée DGC Discovery Award,[5] and was selected as the Canadian entry for theAcademy Award for theBest International Feature Film at the97th Academy Awards.[6][7]

He has also received accolades for his 2014 filmMynarski Death Plummet, which was a shortlistedCanadian Screen Award nominee forBest Live Action Short Drama at the4th Canadian Screen Awards[8] and a shortlistedJutra Award nominee for Best Short Film at the17th Jutra Awards,[9] and his 2017 filmThe Tesla World Light, which won the Canadian Screen Award forBest Animated Short at the6th Canadian Screen Awards and received an Honourable Mention for theToronto International Film Festival Award for Best Canadian Short Film at the2017 Toronto International Film Festival.[10]

His 2024 filmUniversal Language received 13Canadian Screen Award nominations at the13th Canadian Screen Awards in 2025.[11]

Life

Originally fromWinnipeg,Manitoba, he studied history atMcGill University, atUniversité Laval and atInstitut national de l'Image et du son.

He has also had occasional small acting roles in other directors' films, most recently the 2022 filmsThis House (Cette maison) andBefore I Change My Mind.
