Matteo Garrone is an Italian filmmaker.

Early life

Matteo Garrone was born inRome, Italy, the son of a theatre critic, Nico Garrone and a photographer, Donatella Rimoldi.[1]

Career

In 1996 Garrone won theSacher d'Oro, an award sponsored byNanni Moretti, with the short filmSilhouette, that became one of the three episodes that are on his first long feature,Terra di Mezzo in 1997.[2]

Garrone won theEuropean Film Award for Best Director and theDavid di Donatello for Best Director forGomorrah (2008).[3][4] His filmReality (2012) won theGrand Prix at the2012 Cannes Film Festival.[5]

His filmsTale of Tales (2015) andDogman (2018) were selected to compete for thePalme d'Or at the2015 Cannes Film Festival and the2018 Cannes Film Festival respectively.[6][7] TheNastro d'Argento awarded Garrone bothBest Producer andBest Director forDogman.[8] He received the latter again forPinocchio (2019).[9]

In 2019, Garrone was invited to become a member of theAcademy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.[10] In 2024, his filmIo capitano (2023) was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best International Feature Film at the96th Academy Awards, representing Italy.[11]
