Career

[edit]

Griffin made his single-seater debut in 2001, racing forManor Motorsport inFormula Renault 2.0 UK.[1] After two years in the championship, Griffin switched to theBritish GT Championship, racing for Tech 9 Motorsport in the GT Cup class. In his first season in the series, Griffin won the GT Cup title after taking eight wins in 11 races.[2]

During the following four seasons, Griffin raced part-time in the series for Emotional Engineering and Team RPM,[3] along with a one-off appearance inPorsche Carrera Cup Great Britain in 2007.[4] Griffin then returned to full-timeBritish GT Championship competition in 2008, racing in the GT3 class for Chad Racing.[5] However, that year was headlined by Griffin's maiden campaign inInternational GT Open, where he won atMonza withAdvanced Engineering,[6] as he began a long-term relationship with theFerrari brand.[7] He returned for the2009 International GT Open season,[8] but his biggest highlight that year came with Mtech Racing in theBritish GT Championship, winning atSilverstone alongside Duncan Cameron.[9]

In 2010, Griffin joinedAF Corse inGT Open and Mtech Racing inBritish GT.[10] In the former, he ran in the Super GT class for all but one rounds and was 22nd in points, otherwise winning atBrands Hatch in a one-off GTS appearance for Mtech.[11] In the latter, he won both races atOulton Park and race two atSnetterton to secure third in points.[12][13][14] For 2011, Griffin expanded his Mtech commitments to theFIA GT3 European Championship but enjoyed more success at national level, placing fifth in theBritish GT Championship with a win atSpa.[15][16] He also linked up with AF Corse in the newBlancpain Endurance Series, scoring a Pro-Am podium at the marquee24 Hours of Spa.[17][18]

Griffin started off 2012 by winning the inauguralGulf 12 Hours alongsideMarco Cioci and Piergiuseppe Perazzini,[19] before joining the pair for a dualEuropean Le Mans Series andFIA World Endurance Championship programme.[20] While they missed out on the ELMS title after retiring atPetit Le Mans, they did achieve a landmark WEC victory atSilverstone.[21] Griffin also won once inBritish GT at theNürburgring en route to fourth in the standings.[22]

Kicking off 2013 with a second-place finish at theBathurst 12 Hour for Clearwater Racing,[23] Griffin returned toAF Corse for the rest of the year, racing with them in the LMGTE Am class of theFIA World Endurance Championship, along with a part-time schedule inInternational GT Open.[24] In WEC, Griffin took class podiums atLe Mans andBahrain on his way to ninth in the LMGTE Am standings,[25][26] whereas in GT Open, Griffin took four wins and placed fifth in the Super GT standings.[27][28][29] Griffin and Cameron also featured at the2013 24 Hours of Spa, where they, along with Alex Mortimer and works driverToni Vilander, claimed a historic Pro-Am victory and fifth place overall aboard theirFerrari 458 Italia GT3.[30] The icing on the cake would come in theEuropean Le Mans Series withRam Racing,[31] as Griffin andJohnny Mowlem won three out of the five races and finished no lower than second in the other two to clinch the GTE title.[32]

Griffin returned toRam Racing for his LMGTE Pro debut in the2014 FIA World Endurance Championship,[33] but when that program was cut short due to a lack of funding three races in,[34] Griffin returned toAF Corse to race in both theEuropean Le Mans Series andInternational GT Open.[35][36] Racing in the LMGTE class in ELMS, Griffin won atSilverstone,[37]Red Bull Ring andLe Castellet to end the season runner-up by 3.5 points.[38][39] In 2015, Griffin remained withAF Corse to race in both theEuropean Le Mans Series and theBlancpain Endurance Series.[40][41] In the former, he scored podiums atSilverstone andRed Bull Ring to finish third in LMGTE,[42] whereas in the latter, he took the Pro-Am title despite not taking any class wins in the five-race season.[43]

Staying withAF Corse for 2016, Griffin raced with them in both theEuropean Le Mans Series and theBlancpain GT Series Endurance Cup.[44] He clinched back-to-back podiums in the final two races of the former to end the season sixth in the GTE standings,[45] but only managed one Pro-Am class podium in the latter.[46] At the end of the year, Griffin raced for Clearwater Racing in the2016–17 Asian Le Mans Series,[47] taking a lone podium atZhuhai en route to a fifth-place points finish.[48]

In 2017, Griffin reunited with Clearwater Racing for his full-time return toFIA World Endurance Championship competition,[49] whilst he and Cameron joinedAF Corse satellite squad Spirit of Race in both theEuropean Le Mans Series and theBritish GT Championship.[50][51] In WEC, Griffin won atSilverstone and scored five more class podiums to end the year a career-best third in GTE Am.[52] With Spirit of Race, Griffin won at bothRed Bull Ring andLe Castellet to finish fourth in ELMS,[53][54] while taking two overall podiums in British GT atRockingham,[55] where Griffin lost his only win due to a post-race penalty,[56] andSilverstone on his way to seventh in points.[57]

In 2018, Griffin raced forAF Corse in theBlancpain GT Series Endurance Cup andSpirit of Race in the LMGTE class of theEuropean Le Mans Series.[58][59] In the former, he took a Pro-Am win atLe Castellet and two further podiums to finish runner-up in class at season's end.[60] In the latter, he won atMonza and took three more podiums to end the year fifth in the LMGTE standings.[61] Griffin then rejoinedClearwater Racing to tackle the2018–19 FIA World Endurance Championship.[62] In the series' "Super Season", Griffin finished third at bothSpa rounds as well as the2019 24 Hours of Le Mans en route to a fifth-place points finish in LMGTE Am,[63][64] in the team's last season in motorsports.[65] During 2019, Griffin also competed in theEuropean Le Mans Series andInternational GT Open forSpirit of Race,[66][67] registering a pair of LMGTE podiums in the former and winning once atHockenheimring in a reduced Pro-Am schedule in the latter.[68][69]

In 2020, Griffin and Cameron, together with Aaron Scott, won once in theEuropean Le Mans Series atLe Castellet to come third in LMGTE, some 37 points behind a dead heat between theProton Competition Porsche andKessel Racing Ferrari.[70][71] A part-time effort in theBritish GT Championship yielded little in the way of results.[72] The pair continued in theEuropean Le Mans Series in 2021 with a new silver-graded teammate,David Perel.[73] They took three podiums in the first three races, but the death of his father led Griffin to miss the round atMonza and give up his title hopes. Perel and Cameron were runners-up.[74][75] That year, Griffin and Cameron also combined for a part-timeGT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup schedule withAF Corse,[76] steering theirFerrari 488 GT3 to a second Pro-Am win at the24 Hours of Spa, with the help ofRino Mastronardi and factory driverMiguel Molina.[77]

Scaling back to justEuropean Le Mans withSpirit of Race for 2022,[78] Griffin and his teammates stood on the podium twice to end up tenth in points despite skipping the final two rounds.[79][80] In the last ever year ofLMGTE regulations in2023, the trio improved to fifth with a podium at the season finale.[81][82] Griffin stayed put withSpirit of Race inELMS in 2024, regressing to ninth in the standings but winning atLe Castellet as he learned theFerrari 296 in the new LMGT3 class.[83][84] Griffin remained in theEuropean Le Mans Series in 2025, whilst also returning to theBritish GT Championship after a five-year hiatus.[85][86]
