Matthew Finnen Doyle (born May 13, 1987) is an American actor and singer known for his work in musical theatre. He made hisBroadway debut in 2007 inSpring Awakening as a replacement for the roles of Hanschen and Melchior. He later had supporting roles in the Broadway productions ofBye Bye Birdie in 2009 andWar Horse in 2011. He joined Broadway'sThe Book of Mormon in 2012, replacing Nic Rouleau as the starring role of Elder Price. Following a period of performingOff-Broadway andregionally, which included starring as Anthony Hope in the 2017 Off-Broadway revival ofSweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. He joined the Broadway transfer of the gender-swapped production ofCompany in 2021 playing the role of Jamie originated byJonathan Bailey in theWest End. For his performance, he won theTony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. In 2022, he returned to the Off-Broadway stage as Seymour Krelborn in the revival ofLittle Shop of Horrors.
As singer-songwriter, Doyle performs in live shows and has released twoEPs, namely,Daylight (2011) andConstant (2012). He released his first full-length album,Uncontrolled in 2016.
Doyle grew up inWeston, Connecticut, before moving toNorthern California in his adolescence.[3] After graduating fromRedwood High School inLarkspur, California, Doyle went on to train in theLondon Academy of Music and Dramatic Art for a year.[4]
Doyle made his Broadway debut in 2007, at age twenty, as a stand-by in the original Broadway production ofSpring Awakening.[3] Following original cast memberJonathan B. Wright's departure, he was promoted to the role of Hanschen until the show closed in January 2009.
In 2009, he portrayed Hugo Peabody in the revival ofBye Bye Birdie.[5] In 2011, he appeared as Billy Naracott (understudying Albert) inLincoln Center Theater's production ofWar Horse.[6] FollowingWar Horse, he starred as Elder Price in the Broadway production ofBook of Mormon from November 2012 to January 2014.[7]
On screen, Doyle played Jonathan,Eric van der Woodsen's boyfriend, on CW showGossip Girl.[8] He also starred inAlan Brown's adaptation ofRomeo and Juliet,Private Romeo,[9] and had a small singing role in the 2009 film,Once More with Feeling.[10]
In addition to his roles on Broadway and on screen, Doyle has starred in numerousoff-Broadway and regional productions. He starred as Anthony inBarrow Street Theatre's production ofSweeney Todd, inWest Side Story at thePaper Mill Playhouse,Ryan Scott Oliver's Jasper inDeadland at theWest End Theatre in New York[11] and the5th Avenue Theatre in Seattle,[12]Brooklynite at theVineyard Theatre,[13] the musicalGiant in Dallas,[14] and the 2017 stage adaptation ofA Clockwork Orange atNew World Stages.[15] He also appeared as Peter on a recording ofBare: A Pop Opera.[16]
Doyle is also a singer-songwriter. He released his first EP,Daylight, in 2011,[17] with a follow-up EP in 2012,Constant. He released his first full-length album,Uncontrolled, in 2016. Doyle's writing partner is musical theatre composer, Will Van Dyke. Doyle created a web comic,Dents, with childhood friend,Beth Behrs in 2017.[18]
In 2020, Doyle was cast in the gender-bent Broadway revival ofCompany as Jamie, a roleoriginated and first performed as a man byJonathan Bailey in theWest End.[19] In 2022, he won aTony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical for his performance.
Doyle frequently performs solo shows and alongside other Broadway performers at New York venues such as54 Below[20] andJoe's Pub.[21] He streams onTwitch.[22]
In September 2023, Doyle starred asFrank Sinatra in the world premiere production ofSinatra: The Musical at theBirmingham Repertory Theatre in Birmingham, England.[23]
Doyle is gay.[24] He lives inJersey City, New Jersey.[25] He began dating fellow Broadway actor Max Clayton in 2015, and they got engaged in 2023.[26] As of late 2024, Doyle is single.[27]
