Matke (pronounced[ˈmaːtkɛ]) is a settlement in theMunicipality of Prebold in east-centralSlovenia. It lies in the valley of Kolja Creek, a minor right tributary of theSavinja River, and the surrounding hills southeast of Prebold. The area is part of the traditional region ofStyria. The municipality is now included in theSavinja Statistical Region.[2]
The name of the settlement was changed fromSveta Magdalena pri Preboldu (literally, 'Saint Mary Magdalene near Prebold') toMatke in 1955. The name was changed on the basis of the 1948 Law on Names of Settlements and Designations of Squares, Streets, and Buildings as part of efforts by Slovenia's postwar communist government to remove religious elements from toponyms.[3][4][5] The nameMatke is an accusative plural form of the personal nameMatko, derived fromMatej 'Matthaeus', thus originally meaning 'Matko and his family'. Before it became the name of the entire settlement,Matke referred to only one of several hamlets in the settlement.[6]
The localchurch, built on the top of Hom Hill east of the settlement, is dedicated toMary Magdalene and belongs to the Parish of Prebold. It is a single-nave church dating to the second half of the 14th century with a free-standingbelfry built in 1725.[7]
