Matijevic Hill, named afterAmericanNASAengineerJacob "Jake" Matijevic (1947 - 2012), is ahill located on "Cape York", itself on the western rim ofEndeavour Crater lying within theMargaritifer Sinus quadrangle (MC-19) region of theplanet Mars. It was discovered by theOpportunity rover, and named by NASA on September 28, 2012.[1] The "approximate" site coordinates are:2°13′45″S5°21′02″W / 2.22923°S 5.35068°W /-2.22923; -5.35068.
The hill includes arock outcrop calledKirkwood, where Opportunity found a concentration of small spherical features. It also includes an area whereclay minerals have been detected from orbiter observations.[2]
