Matthiola (/ˌmæθiˈoʊlə/) is agenus of flowering plant in the mustard familyBrassicaceae.[2] It is named after Italian naturalistPietro Andrea Mattioli (1501–1577). The genus contains about 50 species ofannual,biennial andperennial herbaceous plants andsubshrubs.[1][3][4][5] Many are cultivated for their heavily scented, colorful flowers.
The common namestock may be applied to the whole genus, more specifically tovarieties andcultivars ofMatthiola incana. Thecommon names evening stock and night-scented stock are applied to varieties ofMatthiola longipetala (syn.M. bicornis).[6] The common nameVirginia stock refers to a separate genus of the same family (Malcolmia maritima).
