Mathew Cullen is an American music video, commercial, and film director. He is co-founder ofMirada Studios withGuillermo del Toro and co-founder of the production companyMotion Theory.[1]

Career

Mathew Cullen grew up inInglewood, California.[1] He foundedLos Angeles-based production company Motion Theory at 23. Since then, he has overseen the production of 500+ projects, and directed and produced over 100 commercials and music videos, including global campaigns forHP,IBM,Google, andDisney.[citation needed] He has worked with artists such asAdele,Jay-Z,Katy Perry,Green Day,Taylor Swift,Pink,Beck andR.E.M. Cullen won two consecutiveGrammy Awards for directingThe Black Eyed Peas' "Boom Boom Pow" andWeezer's "Pork and Beans", the mostblogged-aboutYouTube video of 2008.[citation needed] His work on "Pork and Beans" earned him aGuinness World Record for mostmemes in a video. In 2014, Cullen reunited with Katy Perry to win Best Video at the MTV Europe Music Awards and Best Female Video at the MTV Video Music Awards for "Dark Horse",[citation needed] the most watched music video of the year with over two billion views.[citation needed] He also directed Katy Perry's "Chained to the Rhythm" featuring Skip Marley.

In 2013, he designed and directed the prologue to Guillermo del Toro's filmPacific Rim. In September 2013, he began directing the feature filmLondon Fields, based on thenovel byMartin Amis, starringBilly Bob Thornton,Amber Heard,Jim Sturgess,Theo James,Johnny Depp,Cara Delevingne, andJaimie Alexander. The film was released in 2018 and isone of the few films to hold an approval rating of 0% on the websiteRotten Tomatoes.

He teamed up with filmmakerGuillermo del Toro,Academy Award-winning cinematographerGuillermo Navarro, and executive producer Javier Jimenez to launchMirada Studios, "a studio designed for storytellers" in 2010. Mirada is equal parts design studio, visual effects and animation facility, technology incubator, development and production company.[citation needed] Under his direction, Mirada has launched a number of multi-platform storytelling experiences, including the IBMTHINK Exhibit installation at theLincoln Center, the Ro.me interactive music video, and MirrorWorld, a living storybook app for authorCornelia Funke's book series.

Cullen currently serves on the board of directors forFilm Independent[who?].

Recognition

Cullen was listed onRolling Stone's annual[when?] "Hot List" for his work as a music video director[citation needed], as well asIndieWire's 2013 Influencers List.[citation needed]Wired called him one of six directors who are making music videos cool again[citation needed].
