Matheus Paulo de Santana (born 2 April 1996 inRio de Janeiro ,[ 2] Brazil ) is a Brazilian swimmer.[ 3] He will representDC Trident at theInternational Swimming League during the 2020 season.
International career [ edit ] Santana started competing in national championships in 2008. His first national title came in the Youth I category, in November 2011. Santana swam for the Brazilian team in Multinations, atCorfu , Greece, in 2012. At the 2013 Youth South American Championships in Chile, he won the 100-metre freestyle and finished third in the 50-metre freestyle.[ 4]
Santana was classified to the2013 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships inDubai , but was cut because ofdiabetes .[ 5]
At the2014 South American Games inSantiago ,Chile , Santana won three gold medals in the 100-metre freestyle, 4 × 100-metre freestyle and 4 × 100-metre medley, breaking the competition record in all of them.[ 3]
At the 2014Maria Lenk Trophy inSão Paulo , Santana broke theJunior world record twice in the 100-metre freestyle, with a time of 48.85 in the heats and 48.61 in the final. He qualified for the2014 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships , but decided not to participate in this tournament due to the2014 Summer Youth Olympics .[ 2] [ 6]
At the Brazilian Junior and Senior Swimming Championships in May 2014, he broke the Junior world record in the 100-metre freestyle again, with a time of 48.35, the sixth best time in the world in 2014 in the event.[ 7]
At the2014 Summer Youth Olympics inNanjing , he won a silver medal in theMixed 4 × 100m freestyle relay .[ 8] In the50 metre freestyle , he won a silver medal with a time of 22.43, far from his best time.[ 9] In the100 metre freestyle , Santana won the gold and broke for the Junior world record for the fourth time, with a time of 48.25, the fifth fastest time in the world in 2014.[ 10]
At the2015 Pan American Games inToronto ,Ontario , Canada, Santana won the gold medal in the 4 × 100-metre freestyle relay (where he broke thePan American Games record with a time of 3:13.66, along withMarcelo Chierighini ,João de Lucca andBruno Fratus ). He also finished 7th in the 100-metre freestyle.[ 11] [ 12]
At the2015 World Aquatics Championships inKazan , Santana finished 4th in theMen's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay , again along withMarcelo Chierighini ,Bruno Fratus andJoão de Lucca .César Cielo didn't swim the final - despite participating in the championships, he was feeling shoulder pain this day.[ 13] [ 14] [ 15] In theMen's 100 metre freestyle , he finished 9th with a time of 48.52, almost going to the final.[ 16] [ 17] He also finished 6th in the4 × 100 metre mixed freestyle relay , along withBruno Fratus ,Larissa Oliveira andDaynara de Paula , breaking theSouth American record with a time of 3:25.58.[ 18]
2016 Summer Olympics [ edit ] Santana competed at the2016 Summer Olympics , where he helped the BrazilianMen's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay to go to the final.[ 19]
At the2018 FINA World Swimming Championships (25 m) inHangzhou ,China , Santana, along withCésar Cielo ,Marcelo Chierighini andBreno Correia , won the bronze medal in theMen's 4 × 100 metre freestyle relay , with a time of 3:05.15, setting a South American record.[ 20] [ 21] He won another bronze medal in theMen's 4 × 50 metre medley relay , by participating at heats.[ 22] He also finished 5th in theMixed 4 × 50 metre freestyle relay ,[ 23] 17th in theMen's 50 metre butterfly [ 24] and 26th in theMen's 50 metre freestyle .[ 25]
