Mathías Olivera Miramontes (born 31 October 1997) is a Uruguayan professionalfootballer who plays as aleft-back ordefender forSerie A clubNapoli and theUruguay national team.
After starting his career with few appearance at his home country, he moved to Spanish club Getafe, where he spent five seasons while also being loaned to Albacete in 2018–19. After five years in Spain, he joined Italian club Napoli, winning the Serie A titles in 2022–23 and 2024–25.
Olivera is a former youth international for Uruguay, he made his debut at senior level on January 2022, representing the country at the2022 FIFA World Cup and2024 Copa América.
Born inMontevideo, Olivera is aNacional youth graduate. After progressing through the youth setup, he made his professional debut on 13 February 2016, starting and beingbooked in a 3–0 away win againstRiver Plate.[3]
Olivera appeared in only one further match for the club, a 2–0 loss atPlaza Colonia on 29 February 2016. In December of that year, he was bought outright by his agentDaniel Fonseca and assigned toAtenas de San Carlos inSegunda División.[4]
In July 2017, Oliveira passed a medical examination atGalatasaray, but eventually did not sign a contract and subsequently returned to Uruguay.[5]
On 14 August 2017, Olivera signed a six-year deal withLa Liga clubGetafe.[6] He scored his first professional goal on 21 April 2018, netting the game's only in a 1–0 win againstEibar.[7]
On 4 July 2018,Segunda División sideAlbacete announced the signing of Olivera on a season-long loan deal. He played 15 matches and scored a goal for the club before his loan was cut short by Getafe on 25 January 2019.[8]
On 26 May 2022, ItalianSerie A clubNapoli announced the signing of Olivera on a three-year deal.[9]
Olivera is a former Uruguay youth international. He was part ofUruguay under-20 team which won2017 South American U-20 Championship and finished fourth at2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup.[10]
On 7 January 2022, Olivera was named in Uruguay's 50-man preliminary squad for2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches againstParaguay andVenezuela.[11] He made his senior team debut on 27 January 2022 in a 1–0 win over Paraguay.[12] He scored his first goal for Uruguay in a 2–22026 FIFA World Cup qualifying draw againstColombia on 12 October 2023.[13]
In June 2024, Olivera was called up to represent Uruguay at the2024 Copa América. In their final group stage match against theUnited States, he scored the only goal of a 1–0 victory.[14]
