Marya Shakil is an Indian television journalist and TV news anchor inNDTV.[1][2] She hosts the network's showsNews Epicenter andReporters Project.[3]
Marya's father Shakil Ahmad Khan was a politician from Makhpa, Makhdumpur,Jehanabad district,Bihar.[4] He was initially inCommunist Party of India, later switched toRashtriya Janata Dal, and then joinedJanata Dal (United) in 2010.[5] Khan was member of Bihar legislative assembly twice.[6] He was a senior cabinet minister for energy, law, minority welfare and public relations department for ten years in theRabri Devi government, prior to joiningJanata Dal (United) in 2010.[7] Her father was also a criminal lawyer inPatna High Court and died in August 2012. Marya has two sisters.[8][9]
Marya completed her master's in mass communication fromJamia Millia Islamia in 2005.[10] SheShe did internship at Bennett Coleman and Co. Ltd. (Times Group) in 2004.[citation needed] Marya joinedCNN-IBN (Network 18) in 2005. She did a 30 Minutes documentary on2008 Bihar flood.[11] Ahead of2012 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Marya’s 30-minute show, ‘The Muslim Manifesto’, documented the "layers of change" within the Muslim community.[citation needed] She was a recipient of Chevening South Asia Journalism Fellowship in 2016.[10]
Marya is married to Irfan Khan, who has started BlogMint company.[12] The couple lives inNoida.
Marya has won theRamnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards as Best Political Journalist (Broadcast) in 2012[13] for her show on 2012 UP elections and then again in 2014[14] for her 2014 general elections coverage, including a documentary on Indian Prime MinisterNarendra Modi.
