Marta Dymek ([ˈdɨmɛk]; born 3 July 1990) is a Polish chef, blogger, author of cookbooks, and an advocate forplant-based cooking.
Dymek grew up in Wrocław, Poland. She attended the 14th High School in Wrocław, and graduated from theUniversity of Wrocław, majoring in Interdisciplinary Individual Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (Polish:Międzywydziałowe Indywidualne Studia Humanistyczne), as well as studyinggender studies at the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Polish:Instytut Badań Literackich Polskiej Akademii Nauk). Upon completing her studies, she moved toWarsaw.
In 2010, Dymek founded the culinaryblogJadłonomia, where she sharesplant-based recipes. The title is aportmanteau of thePolish wordjadło ('food') and the suffix-onomia ('-onomy'; as inekonomia, 'economy'). In 2013, her blog won a national competition for Blog of the Year (Polish:Blog Roku) in the "Culinary" category. After receiving the award, she started publishing her recipes in the magazineKuchnia, and shortly afterwards she published her first bookJadłonomia: 100 Recipes Not Only for Vegans. In September 2015, the book was presented as part of the Polish pavilion atExpo 2015.[1] Within two years, the book sold over 250,000 copies.[2] The publication has gone through six reprints and is still being reissued.[3]
After publishing the book, Dymek began creating recipes and articles for the New York culinary quarterlyChickpea Magazine,Smak,Zwierciadło,Twój Styl,Kukbuk andGazeta Wyborcza. She also received her own column inKuchnia.[3] In the following years, she was a regular contributor toPrzekrój[4] andVogue Polska. In 2014, she started hosting her ownvegan cooking program onCanal+ Kuchnia, titledZielona Rewolucja (Green Revolution), which was the first full-length vegan cooking program in Poland.[5] In 2018, the sixth season of the program was recorded inThailand and is the first travel and culinary television program inEurope devoted entirely tovegan cuisine.
In the years 2015–2017, Dymek taughtfood studies at theSWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw.[6]
Dymek's blog has over a million views a month[7] and has been regularly listed as the most influential Polish culinary blog for several years.[8]
In 2017, Dymek published her second culinary bookNowa Jadłonomia: Plant-based recipes from around the world.[9] The first printing of the book (30,000 copies) was exhausted within 10 days.[10] In 2019, the book was published inGermany under the titleZufällig vegan (Coincidentally Vegan).[11]
Dymek's third bookJadłonomia po polsku was published on 3 June, 2020.
Dymek is an ambassador of theRoślinnie Jemy (Let's Eat Plant-based)[12] campaign, which is part of theOtwarte Klatki association. She is sympathetic to ideas ofpragmatic veganism andeffective altruism.[13]
Since the beginning of her activity, Dymek has referred to her food asplant-based cuisine,[14] emphasising that she wishes to encouragevegetarianism andveganism.[15] When asked directly about veganism, she emphasizes the impact ofintensive animal farming on the environment[16][17] and refers to both ethical[18] as well as ecological and environmental arguments.[19]
