Martín Antonio Berhongaray (born 6 March 1978), is anArgentine politician, currently serving asNational Deputy elected inLa Pampa since 2019. He is a member of theRadical Civic Union (UCR). Berhongaray previously served as a member of La Pampa'sprovincial legislature, and as president of the UCR Committee ofSanta Rosa.
Berhongaray was born on 6 March 1978 in the capital ofLa Pampa Province,Santa Rosa.[1] His father wasAntonio Berhongaray (1942–2017), a prominentRadical Civic Union politician who was aNational Senator for La Pampa and served asSecretary of Agriculture during the presidency ofFernando de la Rúa.[2] His mother, Delia Braun de Berhongaray, was also active in politics and served in the Provincial Chamber of Deputies in 2003.[3]
Berhongaray studied law at thePontifical Catholic University of Argentina. He is married and has two children.[1]
Berhongaray was elected to theProvincial Chamber of Deputies in 2007,[4] and was re-elected in 2011 and 2015.[5][6] He was also president of the Radical Civic Union Committee of Santa Rosa.[1]
Berhongaray headed one of the UCR lists in theCambiemosP.A.S.O. primaries ahead of the2017 Chamber of Deputies election, but lost to thePRO list, headed byMartín Maquieyra.[7]
In the2019 legislative election, Berhongaray ran in theJuntos por el Cambio list to theChamber of Deputies in La Pampa as the first candidate.[8] The Juntos por el Cambio list was the second-most voted, with 39.42% of the vote, enough for just Berhongaray to be elected.[9]
As a national deputy, Berhongaray formed part of the parliamentary commissions on Natural Resources, Energy and Fuels, Elderly People, and Communications.[1] He was an opponent of the 2020Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy bill, whichlegalized abortion in Argentina.[10]
