Marphise is an 1852oil on canvashistory painting by the FrenchartistEugène Delacroix.[1][2] The picture was inspired by theepic poemOrlando Furioso by theItalian Renaissance writerLudovico Ariosto. It depicts a scene where the female warrior Marphise has knocked theknight Pinabello off his horse after his arrogant lady friend had mocked Marphise's companion Gabrina. Pinabello's lady is forced by Marphise to stripnaked and give her fine clothes to Gabrina. This was one of the later works of Delacroix, a major figure of theRomantic movement the painting has been in theWalters Art Museum inBaltimore,Maryland since 1931.[3]
