TheMarmara region (Turkish:Marmara Bölgesi) is ageographical region ofTurkey.

Located inEast Thrace, it is bordered byGreece and theAegean Sea to the west,Bulgaria and theBlack Sea to the north, theBlack Sea Region to the east, and theAegean Region to the south. At the center of the region is theSea of Marmara, which gives the region its name. The largest city in the region isIstanbul. Other big cities areBursa,İzmit,Balıkesir,Tekirdağ,Çanakkale andEdirne.

Among the seven geographical regions, the Marmara region has the second-smallest area, yet the largest population; it is the most densely populated region in the country.

Etymology

The region is named for theSea of Marmara, which in turn is named afterMarmara Island, named for the marble (μάρμαρος) found there.

Geography

TheYıldız Mountains andUludağ are in the Marmara Region. Islands in the Aegean Sea areGökçeada andBozcaada, and in the Sea of Marmara areMarmara Island,Avşa,Paşalimanı,İmralı and thePrinces' Islands ofIstanbul.

Climate

The Marmara region has a borderlineMediterranean andhumid subtropical climate on the Aegean Sea and south Marmara Sea coasts, and anoceanic climate on the Black Sea coast. Summers are warm to hot and moderately dry whereas winters are cool, wet and sometimes snowy. The coastal climate keeps the temperatures relatively mild.
