Marko Csollich (MarkoČolić) also spelledMarkus Freiherr von Csollich[1] (15 April 1766 – 14 September 1844)[2] was a senior general in theAustrian Imperial Army with the rank offeldzeugmeister. His brotherPavao Csollich (1768-1838) was a general, vice marshal and commander inVeliki Varaždin.

Biography

Marko Čolić was born inPrivlaka,Slavonia,Austrian Empire (nowCroatia).[3] In 1782 he enrolled in an Austrian cadet school, from where he progressed in rank. From 1793 to 1795 he participated in the battles inFrance andGermany. He was promoted tocaptain in 1796, thenmajor in 1801,lieutenant colonel in 1805, andcolonel in 1809, he was namedchief of staff of the 6th Army Corps. In the battles ofAspern-Essling andWagram he showed exceptional courage and was consequently awarded theKnight's Cross of theMilitary Order of Maria Theresa, which automatically ennobled him the following year.
With the title of baron, he commanded a brigade in 1813. He continued to distinguish himself in battles, namely theBattle of Leipzig, for which he was awarded both the Commander's Cross of theOrder of Leopold and thePrussian Order of the Red Eagle.

Following theTreaty of Paris, he was transferred toHungary as abrigadier general. In 1826 he was inLviv, where he was promoted toFeldmarschalleutnant. He then went on to serve in various places, though the last ten years of his life (1834-1844) he was in command of all the forces inSlavonia andSrem. In 1841, he was promoted toFeldzeugmeister.[4]

Čolić died inPetrovaradin,Vojvodina,Habsburg monarchy (nowSerbia), on 14 September 1844.[5]
