Mark Sonnenblick is an American songwriter and composer, with credits in musical theater, film, and television. He is one of the lyricists for the musicalThe Devil Wears Prada, and has written songs for the filmsLyle, Lyle, Crocodile (2022),Spirited (2022), andTheater Camp (2023).[1] Sonnenblick co-wrote many of the songs for the animated filmKPop Demon Hunters (2025), including "Golden", which topped theBillboard Hot 100 and earned him two nominations at the68th Annual Grammy Awards, including forSong of the Year.[1][2]

Early and personal life

Sonnenblick grew up inGreater Los Angeles and started playing the piano and eventually songwriting as a child. He was introduced to musical theater by his high school music teacher.[3] In 2012, he graduated with aBachelor of Arts inAmerican studies fromYale College.[4] He moved toDenver after college, and then toNew York City in 2014, where he started writing musicals.[3] He was the recipient of a Jonathan Larson Grant in 2018, presented by theAmerican Theatre Wing.[5] He is openly gay,[6] and was honored byOut as one of theOut100 in 2025.[7]

Career

Theater work

Sonnenblick wrote the lyrics forIndependents, a musical performed at theNew York International Fringe Festival in 2012.[8] He also wrote the music for the musicalMidnight at the Never Get, which was stagedoff-Broadway at theYork Theatre in 2018.[3] The production was nominated for twoDrama Desk Awards in 2019, with Sonnenblick nominated in the category ofOutstanding Music.[9] It was additionally nominated in the category ofOutstanding Musical at the 2019Lucille Lortel Awards.[10]

Sonnenblick served as an additional lyricist toShaina Taub forThe Devil Wears Prada, which has music byElton John and a book byKate Wetherhead. Based on both the2003 novel and2006 film adaptation, the musical premiered in Chicago in 2022 before starting aWest End run in 2024.[11] Taub asked Sonnenblick to join the creative team, in order to revise and write additional lyrics for the West End production.[12]

As of 2025, Sonnenblick is working on a stage adaptation of the filmWeekend (2011).[7] In addition, he is writing music and lyrics for a musical stage adaptation of the novel seriesThe Baby-Sitters Club, with a book by Wetherhead and plans for a premiere in 2027.[13]

Film and television work

Sonnenblick was nominated for aPrimetime Emmy Award in the category ofOutstanding Original Music and Lyrics for "Beautiful Things Can Grow" from the documentarySong of Parkland (2019).[14] Sonnenblick co-wrote "All That" withBenj Pasek, Taub, andHannah Friedman for theCOVID-19 pandemic fundraiserSaturday Night Seder in 2020.[15][16]

Sonnenblick joined as one of the songwriters working withPasek and Paul forthe soundtrack ofLyle, Lyle, Crocodile, the 2022 film adaptation of thechildren's book of the same name.[17] He was also a songwriter forthe soundtrack ofSpirited (2022), a modern musical film adaptation ofA Christmas Carol (1843).[1][18][19] One of the songs he co-wrote was "Good Afternoon", which was nominated at the 2023Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards and shortlisted forBest Original Song at the96th Academy Awards.[20][21]

For the musical filmTheater Camp (2023), Sonnenblick co-wrote the songs and score, and was also responsible for arrangement and production ofits soundtrack.[22][23] One of its songs, "Camp Isn't Home", earned Sonnenblick nominations at theGuild of Music Supervisors Awards (forBest Song Written and/or Recording Created for a Film) and at theAstra Film Awards (Best Original Songin 2024).[24][25]

The music team behind the animated filmKPop Demon Hunters (2025) brought on Sonnenblick as a collaborator to write lyrics incorporating the narrative. He is credited as a songwriter on most of thefilm's songs, including "Golden" and "Your Idol".[7][26][27] The songs were commercially and critically successful, with "Golden" topping the U.S.Billboard Hot 100 for eight weeks and receiving fourGrammy Award nominations for theceremony in 2026; as a songwriter, Sonnenblick is nominated in two of the categories:Song of the Year andBest Song Written for Visual Media.[2][28]
