Mark Hominick (born July 22, 1982) is a Canadian retiredmixed martial artist who competed in theFeatherweight division for theUltimate Fighting Championship where he was the inaugural Featherweight title challenger, theWEC, andAffliction. He is also a former TKO Featherweight Champion. He was well known for his outstandingboxing skills and very accurate punching techniques, often utilizing the jab.

Background

As a teen he attendedIngersoll District Collegiate Institute. He was trained by the lateMMA striking coachShawn Tompkins withSam Stout at The Adrenaline Training Center inLondon, Ontario, where he also works as an instructor. Nowadays he owns the training center along with Stout andChris Horodecki.[1]

Hominick made hisUFC debut against former toplightweightYves Edwards atUFC 58. Hominick defeated Edwards viatriangle choke in the second round.

Hominick next foughtBJJ black beltJorge Gurgel atUFC Ultimate Fight Night 5. He won by unanimous decision.

Hominick lost his first two WEC bouts back to back with first round submission losses toRani Yahya andJosh Grispi atWEC 28 andWEC 32 respectively.

He was scheduled to fightDeividas Taurosevičius on October 10, 2009 atWEC 43.,[2] but was forced to withdraw due to an injury and was replaced byJavier Vazquez.

Hominick was scheduled to faceYves Jabouin on January 10, 2010 atWEC 46,[3] but Jabouin was forced off the card with an injury.[4] Hominick instead faced WEC newcomerBryan Caraway, winning via first round submission.[5]

The fight with Yves Jabouin eventually took place on June 20, 2010 atWEC 49.[6] Hominick won viaTKO in the second round. They both won aSherdog award for best round of 2010. This fight earned him a $10,000Fight of the Night award.[7]

Hominick facedLeonard Garcia on September 30, 2010 atWEC 51.[8] He won the fight via split decision.

Return to UFC

On October 28, 2010,World Extreme Cagefighting merged with theUltimate Fighting Championship. As part of the merger, allWEC fighters were transferred to theUFC.[9]

Hominick faced former training partner,George Roop on January 22, 2011 atUFC Fight Night 23 in a top contender bout.[10] Hominick stopped Roop via punches in the first round.[11]

Hominick facedUFC Featherweight ChampionJosé Aldo on April 30, 2011 atUFC 129, where he lost via unanimous decision (48–45, 48–46, and 49–46) in a bout that earned them a $129,000Fight of the Night bonus award.[12]

Hominick facedChan Sung Jung on December 10, 2011 atUFC 140. Hominick attempted to recklessly attack Jung immediately after touching gloves and was dropped with a counter right. Jung followed up with punches until Hominick went limp and the referee brought an end to the fight, tying one of the fastest KOs in the UFC.[13]

Hominick faced Eddie Yagin on April 21, 2012 atUFC 145.[14] Hominick lost the fight via split decision, in a bout that earned both participantsFight of the Night honors.[15]

Hominick facedPablo Garza on November 17, 2012 atUFC 154.[16]He lost the fight by unanimous decision.

After the loss at UFC 154, Hominick announced his retirement on December 11, 2012, stating "I truly got to live my passion and follow my dreams by competing in mixed martial arts, especially under the Zuffa banner, but UFC 154, that's the last fight I'll be in the octagon, as I'm retiring and looking to move on to the next phase of my career."[17]

Personal life

Hominick attendedI.D.C.I school inIngersoll, Ontario. Hominick married in December 2009.[18][19] They have two children.[1]

Mark Hominick has been involved with several other UFC fighters (Sean Pierson,Sam Stout, andMatt Mitrione) as part of aToronto area anti-bullying program.[20]
