Maria Anna "Marianna" Madia (Italian pronunciation:[mariˈannamaˈdiːa]; born 5 September 1980) is an Italian politician of theDemocratic Party and a member of theItalian Chamber of Deputies since 2008.
She was Minister of Public Administration and Simplification from 22 February 2014 to 1 June 2018 (Renzi Cabinet andGentiloni Cabinet).[1][2]
Madia was born inRome in 1980. Her family came fromCalabria and settled in Rome. Her great-grandfather,Titta Madia, was alawyer,journalist, andFascist andMSI member of theChamber of Deputies.[3] Her father was the politician, journalist and actorStefano Madia.
She studied atLycée français Chateaubriand in Rome. She studied at theUniversity of Rome La Sapienza and undertook aPhD atIMT Institute for Advanced Studies Lucca inpolitical science.
In June 2013 she married Mario Gianani, a television and film producer.[4] They have twins, Francesco and Margherita, born on 8 April 2014.[5]
She considers herself a practisingCatholic.[6]
Madia began her career in February 2008 when she was chosen by the Secretary of theDemocratic Party,Walter Veltroni, who proposed her to be candidate forChamber of Deputies.[2] In April 2008 shewas elected. She was reelectedin 2013 andin 2018.[7]
