Maria Valcheva Bakalova[2] was born on 4 June 1996 inBurgas to Rumyana Bakalova, a nurse, and Valcho Bakalov, a chemist.[3][4][5] She began taking singing lessons and playing the flute around age six, and sang in a choir that toured across Europe.[6][7] Bakalova enrolled in acting classes at the age of 12, majoring indrama theater and minoring in flute at the National School of Music and Stage Arts in Burgas, where she was a straight A student; she recalled, "I was a super-disciplined child. I was reading too many books. I was obsessed withDostoyevsky, at like 15, 16".[8][7] As a teenager, Bakalova developed an interest in literature, especially the works ofGabriel García Márquez,Jorge Luis Borges andMikhail Bulgakov, as a method of escapism.[9] She was inspired to pursue film acting after watchingThe Hunt, and has cited filmmakerThomas Vinterberg as her biggest influence alongsideSusanne Bier,Pedro Almodóvar,Paolo Sorrentino andAndrea Arnold as other major influences.[8][10]

Bakalova later moved toSofia where she majored in drama at theNational Academy for Theatre and Film Arts.[11] As a student, she appeared in various stage productions, includingLes Liaisons dangereuses,Sexual Perversity in Chicago,Kennedy's Children andThe Trial.[12][13] Bakalova made her on-screen debut playing a supporting part in the 2017 comedy-drama filmXIIa.[3] In the same year, she made her first headlining appearance inTransgression, where she played Yana, a young girl who has an unusual relationship with an aging rock musician.[14] She secured the role after a classmate of hers signed her up for ablind audition during her first year at university.[15] The film was screened at several film festivals in Europe and North America, before being released throughHBO Max in 2021.[16] In 2018, Bakalova won the award for Best Actress at Toronto's Alternative Film Festival for her performance.[17]

In her third year of studies, she volunteered to help filmmakersKristina Grozeva andPetar Valchanov, who taught the only film acting class at the academy, with scheduling and other tasks, and traveled with them to the set of a film they were working on so that she could watch how they worked and learn from them. One of the directors invited her to audition for abit in their filmThe Father (2019); she landed the part and filmed a briefflashback scene as the young version of one of the characters.[7][18]The Father won theCrystal Globe award for Best Film at the54th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, and was selected as the Bulgarian entry for theBest International Feature Film category at the93rd Academy Awards.[19][20]

Driven by her fascination with Danish cinema—particularly with the work of Vinterberg,Lars von Trier and theirDogme 95 movement—Bakalova used part of her university scholarship to take her parents on a trip to Denmark a few months before graduating. There, she visitedZentropa's headquarters, and asked if she could become aP.A. or a runner on von Trier's next film.[13][21] She was sent away because she didn't speak Danish, prompting her to begin studying the language, before eventually graduating and moving to Los Angeles in 2019.[22][23] Bakalova next starred in the 2020 comedy-dramaLast Call as Alexandra, a suicidal girl who is on the verge of ending her life.[24] Her performance was received positively by critics, and Yanko Terziev ofCapital wrote that her portrayal of the character brought "warmth and lyricism" to the film.[25]
