Mare Vaporum/væˈpɔːrəm/ (Latinvapōrum, the "sea of vapors") is alunar mare located between the southwest rim ofMare Serenitatis and the southeast rim ofMare Imbrium. It was named byGiovanni Battista Riccioli in 1651.[2][3]
The mare lies in an old basin or crater that is within theProcellarum basin. It is 242 kilometers (150 mi) in diameter and 55,000 km2 (21,000 sq mi) in area, and is bordered to the northeast by the mountain rangeMontes Apenninus. In the south of the mare is Rima Hyginus, arille intersected by the craterHyginus. The lunar material surrounding the mare is from theLower Imbrianepoch, and the mare material is from theEratosthenian epoch.[citation needed]
