Marcos Alexandre Souza Soares (born 30 July 1975) is a Brazilianfootballmanager and former player who played as acentral defender. He is the current manager of theSaudi Arabia national U-20.
Known asDitão during his playing days,Rio de Janeiro-born Soares began his senior career with hometown sideAmerica-RJ. After playing forMesquita andSerrano in his native state, he moved toAtlético Alagoinhas in 2000.
In July 2001, Soares moved abroad and joinedSegunda Liga sideU.D. Oliveirense,[1] but could not prevent the club'srelegation in the campaign. After another campaign in the club, he subsequently representedS.C. Espinho andOliveira do Bairro S.C. before switching to Thailand'sTerengganu FC in 2005.
In 2006, after a short stint atGuangzhou FC, Soares returned to his home country after signing forBrazlândia. He agreed to a deal withDom Pedro II for the 2007 season, and subsequently retired with the club due to injuries.
Shortly after retiring, Soares became an assistant manager atBrasiliense. In 2009, he started to manage the club's under-20 squad, being also an interim in the 2010 campaign.[2]
After being in charge ofSanta Maria's under-20s in 2010, Soares left the club in February 2011 to become the interim manager ofAtlético Ceilandense. In March, he returned to Brasiliense as a replacement to sackedReinaldo Gueldini, and won the year'sCampeonato Brasiliense.[3] Confirmed as manager for the2011 Série C,[2] he was sacked in September and replaced byArgel Fucks.
Soares was named manager ofSobradinho on 13 January 2012.[4] After leaving the club, he toured through some European clubs[5] before returning to Brazil. In July 2013, he took overBrasília.[6]
On 9 February 2014, despite being unbeaten in the season, Soares was sacked by Brasília.[7] He subsequently returned to Brasiliense for a third spell, but was also dismissed on 23 October.[8]
On 17 December 2014, Soares agreed to becomeAnápolis manager for the upcoming season.[9] After leading the club in their promotion to the first division ofCampeonato Goiano, he was named manager ofSantos'under-20 squad.[10]
Soares was relieved of his duties fromPeixe in February 2017, and becameDyego Coelho's assistant atCorinthians'under-20 side the following month.[11] On 14 December 2018, he was appointed manager of the under-20 team ofBotafogo.[12]
Soares was sacked byBota on 10 October 2020,[13] and took overMaringá the following 4 January.[14]
