Marcelino Martínez Cao (Spanish pronunciation:[maɾθeˈlinomaɾˈtineθ]; born 29 April 1940), known simply asMarcelino, is a Spanish formerfootballer who played as astriker.
Marcelino was born inAres,Province of A Coruña,Galicia. In 1959, he signed withReal Zaragoza from localRacing de Ferrol, going on to remain with the former club until his retirement 11 years later.[1]
During his spell with theAragonese, always spent inLa Liga, Marcelino scored 117 goals in all competitions, contributing solidly as they won three major titles, including twoCopa del Rey trophies.[2] He was part of an efficient attacking line dubbedLos Magníficos (The Magnificent) which also featuredCanário,Carlos Lapetra,Eleuterio Santos andJuan Manuel Villa.[3]
Marcelino played 14 times forSpain, participating in the1964 European Nations' Cup and the1966 FIFA World Cup.[4][5] In the former tournament, he scored the decisive 2–1 inthe final against theSoviet Union, through aheader.[6]
At the time of his debut, Marcelino was the first Zaragoza player to ever represent the national team.[4]
