Maquis (UK:/mæˈk/ma-KEE,US:/mɑːˈk/mah-KEE,French:[maki]) ormacchia (/ˈmɑːkiə/MAH-kee-ə,Italian:[ˈmakkja]; oftenmacchia mediterranea in Italian;Corsican:machja,pronounced[ˈmaca];Croatian:makija;Occitan:maquís;Catalan:màquia) is asavanna-likeshrublandbiome in theMediterranean region, typically consisting of densely growingevergreenshrubs.[1][2]

Maquis is characterized by plants of the familyLamiaceae, generaLaurus andMyrtus, and speciesOlea europaea,Ceratonia siliqua, andFicus carica. It is similar togarrigue.[3]
