Manuel Sanchís Martínez (26 March 1938 – 28 October 2017) was a Spanishfootballdefender andmanager.

Like his son,Manolo Sanchís, he representedReal Madrid andSpain. They were one of only four father/son pairs to have won theEuropean Cup/Champions League (the others beingCesare andPaolo Maldini,Carles andSergio Busquets andZinedine andLuca Zidane),[1] and he played 213La Liga matches over ten seasons.

An international for two years, Sanchís appeared with the national team at the1966 World Cup.

Playing career

Sanchís was born inAlberic, Valencia.[2] During his career, he representedCD Condal,Real Valladolid,Real Madrid andCórdoba CF, and he was a member of the successful Madrid sides in the mid-60s that won fourLa Liga championships in five years, with the addition of the1965–66 edition of theEuropean Cup (in this competition, he appeared 35 times for the club).[3][4]

Sanchís earned 11caps forSpain, and represented the nation at the1966 FIFA World Cup. In the group stage of that tournament, he scored in a 2–1 win againstSwitzerland.[5][2]

Style of play

An offensive-minded defender who was deployed as aforward earlier in his career, Sanchís was known for his exceptional physical qualities, including his strength as well as his class and skills.[7]

Coaching career

After retiring, Sanchís started working as a manager. After beginning withReal Madrid Castilla, he was also in charge ofCD Tenerife in theSegunda División[8] before being appointed at theEquatorial Guinea national team.[9]

Asthe nation was immersed in a situation that would lead to thecoup d'état againstFrancisco Macías Nguema, the sporting facilities in the country suffered from a deep lack of investment, and Sanchís eventually left his post and returned to his country.[5] He subsequently was in charge of lowlyAD Torrejón,AD Parla,Daimiel CF,CD Don Benito andUD Alzira, mainly in theCommunity of Madrid.[10]

Death

Sanchís died on 28 October 2017 in Madrid at the age of 79, frompulmonary embolism.[11][12]
