TheManitoba wolf (Canis lupus griseoalbus), also known as thegrey-white wolf,[3] is an extinctsubspecies of gray wolf that roamed in the southernNorthwest Territories, northernAlberta,Saskatchewan, and south-centralManitoba. This wolf is recognized as a subspecies ofCanis lupus in the taxonomic authorityMammal Species of the World (2005).[2]

History

In the early 19th century,John Richardson first cataloged the Manitoba wolf and gave it itstaxonomic name.[4] The species itself was highly prized for its fur[5] and was hunted to extinction in the wild in the early 20th century.
