Manfred Alonso Ugalde Arce (born 25 May 2002) is a Costa Rican professionalfootballer who plays as aforward forRussian Premier League clubSpartak Moscow and theCosta Rica national team.

Club career

Saprissa

Debuting forSaprissa in early 2019, Ugalde scored two goals in a 3–1 victory overBelmopan Bandits inCONCACAF League play on 31 July 2019.[2] He scored his first professional hat-trick in a 6–0 victory overLimón on 21 October.[3] In November, Ugalde was named as the Best Younger Player of the2019 CONCACAF League tournament, with four goals in seven matches.[4]

Lommel

In July 2020 Ugalde signed a contract withCity Football Group and joinedBelgian First Division B clubLommel.[5]

Loan to Twente

On 25 June 2021, Ugalde joinedEredivisie sideTwente on a season-long loan deal.[6] On 1 July 2022, the loan was renewed for the 2022–23 season.[7]

Twente

On 6 July 2023, Ugalde signed forTwente on a permanent basis for four years.[8]

Spartak Moscow

On 29 January 2024, Ugalde moved toRussian Premier League clubSpartak Moscow on a four-and-a-half-year contract.[9] On 23 November 2024, Ugalde scored 4 goals in a 5–2 victory againstLokomotiv Moscow, taking the top spot in the league goalscorers' race with 12 goals.[10] He went into the winter break of the Russian season in December with 15 goals scored. He became the league's top scorer of the season with 17 goals.[11]

International career

Ugalde made his international senior debut forCosta Rica on 1 February 2020 against theUnited States, coming on as a substitute forMarco Ureña in a 1–0 defeat.[12]

In September 2021 after a difficult international window for Costa Rica during thethird round of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualification and criticisms of his performance by head coachLuis Fernando Suárez, Ugalde announced he would no longer accept call-ups to Los Ticos as long as Suárez remained coach.[13]

After the dismissal of Luis Fernando Suárez after the2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup, In August 2023 Ugalde accepted a call-up from interim coachClaudio Vivas to Costa Rica ahead of a friendly againstSaudi Arabia.[14] During the match on September 8, he scored his first goal for his country, netting the second goal in an eventual 3–1 victory.[15]
