Historical comarca

The historical Manchuela comarca included the municipalities ofTarazona de la Mancha andVillalgordo del Júcar, and theRequena-Utiel comarca which had been part of theCuenca Province until 1851 and is now part of theprovince of Valencia,Valencian Community, except forMira.[1]

This comarca has been traditionally a place ofwheat,olive andwine growers, along with some cattle rearing. There are two wineDesignations of Origin in the comarca,Manchuela DO andRibera del Júcar DO.[2]

Present-day comarca

The present-day Manchuela comarca is divided betweenManchuela Albaceteña inAlbacete Province, theManchuela Conquense inCuenca Province and the Valencian Manchuela (Requena-Utiel) in theValencia Province. TheJúcar River cuts across the high plateau of La Meseta forming deep gorges(Hoces del Júcar) offering spectacular landscapes. TheSerranía de Cuenca forms the northern boundary of the comarca, and the Sierra de las Cabrillas the eastern. The western boundary is formed by a section of the Júcar River and the southernAlmansa corridor.
